Things I have learned after moving from NYC

Now that I have been out of NYC for almost three years, I thought I would write a follow up to my last post. Some good things, some bad.  Feel free to add whatever you think I am missing, this is a work in progress.

  1. Never compare your current city to NYC.  It just isn’t fair.
  2. Being an ex-New Yorker, by default makes you the fastest walker.
  3. Other cities sleep.  I never knew that some diners aren’t open 24 hours.  Some are only open for breakfast and lunch.
  4. When you tell people you are an ex-new Yorker, for good or bad, they will give you their opinion of New York.
  5. Almost everyone has a “I can’t believe how expensive “X” was” in New York City story.
  6. You can now sleep with a window open.
  7. You may have complained about it every single day you were in NYC, but when you experience a different subway system, you will miss NYC’s.
  8. No one from New York City will come visit you,  ever.
  9. When you go back to visit NYC for a weekend, the first glimpse of the city will make your heart skip a beat.  So will the next ten glimpses.
  10. When you go back to visit, something will have changed.
  11. Just like New York any place you wind up in will have theatres, history, and tourist locations that you will never go to
  12. Taxis cost too much in NYC, but being the designated driver sucks.
  13. When going to a house party you just can’t stop off at the bodega on the corner and get a six pack anymore.
  14. Homeless people in other cities seem more homeless.
  15. People remember you.  When you go to a store multiple times you are not one in a million people.  You are one in a thousand.  The clerks will recognize you.
  16. God I miss coffee carts on every corner.
  17.  At one point someone will say “you have to try these, they are just as good as New York bagels”.  They will not be.
  18. The first time you go to a bar, order a beer, hand over a ten dollar bill and get six dollars back…will make you think the bartender made a mistake.
  19. Fat people, fat people everywhere!
  20. In the back of your mind you will always carry the fantasy of still living in NYC.

Hi Mark, these are great! And very comprehensive. I agree with all of them, and am having trouble coming up with any others!

I forgot this one!

#21.  When you meet a waiter or waitress, that is their only job.  Not trying to be an actor, writer, musician, etc...they are a waiter.
