I can hardly believe I'm saying this, but we leave New York at the end of the month! We've decided to simplify our original plan
, and stay in Austin, TX
for 5 months (Nov-March) and Asheville, NC
for 5 months (March-July). We've found a cute little guesthouse to rent in south Austin - in fact, the owners are ex-New Yorkers.
How am I feeling about facing my last month in this great city? One word: impatient! That's certainly not how I thought I'd feel at this point - I expected to feel sad, nervous, harried, or to be second-guessing the decision. But instead, I can't believe we still have a whole month before we get on the road.
I'm also relieved that I won't be spending another winter here. Last winter I decided I couldn't do one more cold season in New York - I was fed up with unreliable radiator heat, trudging through slush, and sitting on the train sweating in my down coat. As the weather gets chilly here, instead of dreading the coming winter months, I'm fantasizing about the climate in Austin in December (the average high is 62
, and they have around 300 days of sunshine
It is getting sad to make plans with friends, knowing that it may be the last time I see them in a year or so. And I really hope I don't lose it at our going away party in a couple weeks. But I'm excited about meeting new people in new places, and I'm already looking forward to coming back to visit.
A few months ago, I made a list of the things I wanted to do before I left. The ones I've accomplished are in bold; the rest may have to wait until a future visit, which is fine. I figure if I haven't gotten around to them in 9 years of living here, they can wait a bit longer.

So I guess that's about it for now. I'm feeling resolved, impatient, and excited. Which is pretty much the opposite of what I expected. Or maybe this is just the 3-weeks-left calm before the 1-week-left storm?
