Life After Equinox, Part I: New Beginnings

I never used to worked out all that much - some morning stretching/easy yoga and the very occasional yoga class. Otherwise, mine was a typical New Yorker workout: miles on foot to and fro around the city.

And then I discovered Equinox: From the first moment I walked in, the air, enhanced by a potent burst of eucalyptus, triggered the happy gene. My head became all buzzy. I was positively high and I was hooked, $175/month fee be damned because I was so freaking happy!!

I miss Astoria (and you can live there!)

The fact that I miss Astoria is unsurprising seeing as I currently live in Saudi Arabia. Open air cafes, thrift stores, the subway, Greek restaurants, a bazillion bagel shops and the riverfront park would be nice right now (though I would not trade a blistering cold winter for the temperate winter weather in Riyadh.)

New Yorker in Austin

After the visit with Anna in Austin for an early Thanksgiving, I did not miss NY. Anna, the previously New Yorker, seemed like she belonged in Austin. I guess I went to see Anna. Doesn't matter where she lives. Anna is what I treasure. She did take us to several cool places like no other place. The southern cooking at the outdoor eatery was just perfect. I grew up in the southern states, including Texas, so the catfish and okra with a Coke was perfect!!!! for me. I have videos that play on… Continue

Flat Iron v. Flat-screen: Hosting Visitors Outside of NYC

In Austin, J and I have been living in a guest house next to an old Victorian home. For the last 10 days of November, the family that lives in the big house (our landlords) were out of town, and asked us to house sit. We decided it would be a great opportunity to have some guests, so my parents came down for a few days. They stayed in the guest house while we took over the big house.

(Coincidentally, the owners lived in New York for a few years, so we were surrounded by NYC-related… Continue
