Where should we go?

I've lived in Brooklyn for the last 7 years, and my fiancé has been here for 10.  We've started talking about leaving.  We love it here, but let's be honest, it's not an easy place to live.  We visit friends in other cities and envy their huge apartments and cheap (in comparison) rent but can't imagine ourselves living in those places.  I've been a bartender the entire time I've lived here and have found it really hard to find a job that isn't in the service industry.  I am thankful that I…

Hi Michelle -

After being here for two months I am starting to adjust to the area! I am originally from here, but I haven't lived here since 1999. That's 13 years, to be exact :)

CONS:

Having a car here is a must. Although you can live in the village and theoretically walk to everything, there is no grocery store in the village proper... zoning laws in Rhinebeck have made it so that nearly EVERYTHING one needs -- a market that is comparable to the quality found in Whole Foods, for example -- is located across the river in Kingston.

Socializing. I am a big beer drinker, and three days after I got here I received a DWI from the friendly local authorities.

Rent. It is comparable to that Brooklyn. I live for free with family :) You can get a place out of town or up in Columbia County or down in Hopewell Junction area for less...

PROS:

Big green fields!

Silence in which to sleep!

Better air quality!

Scads of fresh organic produce at cheap prices!

Good music scene!

Easy access to the city --- I'm in town at least once a week!

No crowds!

Easier everything!

Hope this helps --- feel free to be in touch :)
