What are you?
Ex-New Yorker
What is your relationship to New York?
I moved to NYC in the fall of 1999. After a year in Astoria, I moved to Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn and stayed for 8 years, turning my experience into a play called "There Goes the Neighborhood."

In March 2008, I left "for a month" to clear my head. After a year-long nomadic journey that included stints in South Carolina and New Orleans, I fell in love with and in Boulder, CO.

I founded this site with my dear friend Anna as a way to process my experience of leaving New York. Read more about our project, and how we came to collaborate, here.

I make my living as a freelance writer and editor, have a theater collective called Word on the Street Productions, and will drop anything for a glass of red wine.

Friday Night = Wig Shopping

My last two Friday nights have begun the same way--with a trip with my fiance to The Ritz costume shop to pick up a wig for a costume party. Two weeks ago, he found a Mick Jagger wig and I found an Edie Sedgwick-or-just-mod-girl one for an Andy Warhol Factory Party I threw with my friends to celebrate our shared birthdays. (We covered an entire room in silver mylar, another in aluminum foil, set up a "Screen Test" area, and had a live video feed between the various rooms. Epic.) This past… Continue

Hi Mari--thanks for reminding me to take off the "Test User" mask :) I'm a Brooklynite feeling a deep itch to leave the city after nearly 10 years here... oh, but where to go? New Orleans is on my list of possibilities--how long were you there? Why did you go?

I think of Brooklyn as home, not Manhattan. When people come to visit it is Brooklyn I want to show off. I will always think fondly of the time here, I just know it won't be forever.

Hey my dear, what I like most of NYC is the diversity, I can walk one block and I can will see so many different faces... so many different restaurants.
The least thing that I like is that I feel that everyone is in a rush, I see many careless faces, everyone is in their own world, the subways (transit) is bad, I hate it! and if you do not have a good job forget about moving to NYC, the rent is ridiculous high, no control! all your money goes into paying bills & rent!

It is like living in between two different worlds, a place I love and a place that sometimes I hate! walking to work everyday, I wonder "Is it time", I wonder" Hey "Que sera, sera", Life is just a dream!

Have you ever been to a real movie theatre in LA? New York's theaters are old, they smell, they're dank, the sound is fucking shit, they're dirty. In LA a movie theater is a sensory event, not a place that looks like some homeless man is going to be jerking off next to you.

Of course, everything in New York pretty much smells.

No, we haven't talked about it. But I'll be thinking about what to write.

no. It's just... clean. And beautiful, and ornate, and grand, and filled with people who applaud and cheer and boo, and leather seats that recline, and gourmet treats, and reserved seating so you don't wait in line. Sometimes old hollywoodness, sometimes new amazingness. Grand sweeping ceilings, and full bars, and old photographs of ghosts, and hands and feet, and FUCK New York.

I just mean big photos of old premieres at the Dome or the Chinese or the Village...and walking out of a movie onto the hands and feet of old stars at the Chinese. I was just ramping up to say "Fuck New York"
