Back in 2008, ANNA started a secret blog to explore the pros and cons of leaving NYC. Why was the blog secret? First, because every time she brought up the idea of moving, her friends were either bewildered or downright discouraging. And second, because their concerns only echoed her own. She wasn't sure which was worse -- discussing these questions with her New Yorker friends, or forcing herself to answer them.
Enter MARI. In order to get some perspective on a painful breakup, Mari decided to leave New York "for a month." That was in 2008. She has now become a convert to the healthy hippie mountain town of Boulder, CO -- but recently realized that nearly all of her friends in Boulder are former New Yorkers. When she comes back to New York to visit, she realizes the city is deeper in her blood than she thought. She's never sure which is worse -- admitting this to her New Yorker friends, or admitting it to herself.
Throughout these experiences, we have both been in search of any resources (books, websites, blogs... support groups?) related to the New-Yorker-Leaving-New-York dynamic, but have come up empty-handed. We have a sneaking feeling this is because everyone is keeping their struggles with these questions on secret blogs -- but we want to go public!
