Love this video - reminds me that for all we complain about it, New York is still beautiful.

A Year in New York

Living in New York I'd grab my Canon 7D, or S95, and shoot footage of what was going on around me. It seemed like a never ending project and you could stay filming life in New York for a long time. But eventually I put my camera down and started to…

What are you?
Current New Yorker
What is your relationship to New York?
I lived in New York from 2000-2008, and was a lifelong East Coaster before moving to Los Angeles in fall '08 for grad school.

Well, it turns out I hated Los Angeles more than words can adequately communicate. After a short stint in my hometown of Baltimore, MD, I am back in NYC as of November 1.

20 hours in NYC

Between September 2000 and August 2008 I was never out of NYC for longer than a month. Then I decided I needed to go to grad school in Los Angeles and moved across the country. At around four months without a shot of NYC I would start to hit the crazy mark. This last dry spell has been the longest in ten years: an epic 7.5 months. I really can't complain too much about the last two months as they've been filled with some pretty amazing international travel, but now that I'm back in the US,… Continue

Escape from LA

It's official. I'm leaving Los Angeles on June 19. I won't miss it at all.

Sure, I have friends I've made here in the past two years, whom I'll certainly miss. But the truth is that I never really found my community here, and it was not for lack of trying.

And the other truth is that, while I may defiantly defend my lack of car ownership and driving skills to anyone who'll listen, it's worn me down. The logistics of simple things like buying cat litter or going to a dinner… Continue

pancake city

Los Angeles is a horizontal city. It has features in common with many desert and/or western cities: it's big, sprawling and flat. This produces numerous urban phenomena that seem strange to me, having only lived in vertical cities (New York) and small, contained eastern cities (Baltimore). Here are two:

1. Helicopters. I'm sure the NYPD has helicopters, but only an insane person or an action movie director would dream of a police helicopter chase through New York City. But the… Continue

Hi Laura, welcome to the site! Love your take on urban planning, etc. Could make an interesting blog post (hint, hint!) Also, perhaps you'd like to join the LA Group? http://lifeafternyc.ning.com/group/losangelesca

Yeah, I'm definitely still getting used to the car-focused mentality myself. Looking forward to your perspective!
