What are you?
Current New Yorker
What is your relationship to New York?
I lived in New York from 2000-2008, and was a lifelong East Coaster before moving to Los Angeles in fall '08 for grad school.

Well, it turns out I hated Los Angeles more than words can adequately communicate. After a short stint in my hometown of Baltimore, MD, I am back in NYC as of November 1.

pancake city

Los Angeles is a horizontal city. It has features in common with many desert and/or western cities: it's big, sprawling and flat. This produces numerous urban phenomena that seem strange to me, having only lived in vertical cities (New York) and small, contained eastern cities (Baltimore). Here are two:

1. Helicopters. I'm sure the NYPD has helicopters, but only an insane person or an action movie director would dream of a police helicopter chase through New York City. But the… Continue

Hi Laura, welcome to the site! Love your take on urban planning, etc. Could make an interesting blog post (hint, hint!) Also, perhaps you'd like to join the LA Group? http://lifeafternyc.ning.com/group/losangelesca

Yeah, I'm definitely still getting used to the car-focused mentality myself. Looking forward to your perspective!
