"Absolutely naked and disarming truth but I would disagree with "...a cozy little house? A sweet little garden...". I am not sure that these would solve the problem. Everybody is different. Thank you Anna."

You're home for the holidays. At a neighborhood gathering, someone asks where you live. You say, “New York.” And they say, “City?” When you confirm, you can see on their faces how impressed they are.And you love it.You managed to get out of this dinky town and carve out a place for yourself in a city that’s…See More

"This post is frighteningly accurate. I feel guilty every Friday night I stay home (which is frequent), for every concert I miss, and every museum I'm not taking advantage of. And I find myself dreaming more and more of a "cozy little…"

What are you?
Ex-New Yorker
What is your relationship to New York?
Hi! I founded this site with my dear friend Mari as a way to process my experience of considering leaving New York. Read more about our project, and how we came to collaborate, here.

I moved to New York in 2000, after graduating from college. I lived in Astoria, Queens for a couple years, and then moved to Boerum Hill, Brooklyn. After 9 years in NYC, I started to feel like I was treading water. I wanted a backyard and mental space and a healthier lifestyle. We left in November 2009 and tried out Austin before landing in Asheville, NC.

I guess Memphis would be my "second wife," and Humboldt my third. LA was was only a torrid affair. I seem like one of those characters in a George Jones song. Having moved from NY twice, I can only say that NY was the "best sex" I ever had (so to speak). But that's not exactly where I am at these days. It's about the acceptance of having left, and you feel alright about it. Until I get the opportunity to move to Ireland, where I really would like to locate, I have settled in living under tall redwoods.

Good luck; I love you very much Raddatz.

btw, I wanted to tell you: I think we're moving back to Greensboro, NC in a year. I love Baton Rouge but NC is our home. Asheville is super awesome...... beautiful. I'm honestly hoping you'll move there though all those other places seem fantastic as well but if you moved there, I would probably see you sometime! Or if you moved to New Orleans or Baton Rouge, but not as easily.

(Greensboro is great too but it's not in the mountains or on the swamp. It is in the middle of tons of universities though. I can start that group and when we move next year.)
